With the halfway point of the Spring Split just passing by, Golden Guardians find themselves tied for second last and a playoff spot at the same time. With the majority of the teams so close together, it’s hard to make accurate statements about who is better than who. Outside of Cloud 9 and CLG, most teams have looked relatively equal. With another end of split tiebreaker mess on the horizon, every match matters. With several matches against close opponents coming up, here are a few keys to victory based on the previous success of GGS.
Put Closer on a playmaker
The first game that Closer had in the LCS started off with a bang on Jarvan IV. A level 2 invade against Meteos allowed him to snowball into having control of the jungle for most of the game. If not for a miracle elder dragon steal, GGS would’ve started off 1-0. Although there have been times where he seems to be disjointed from the team, the champion has allowed him to make plays throughout the season. Other champions like Lee Sin have given him early game power to help his lanes excel. His decisive engages have helped close out several GGS wins.
Moving forward, look for him to continue to succeed on champions with strong ganks. GGS does not need him to be a carry with how Goldenglue and FBI have been playing. What they need is for someone to apply earlier pressure and strong engage later in the game. His one Reksai and one Olaf game did not look as strong as the rest of his performances. The playstyle just did not seem to vibe with the rest of the team. Fortunately, he seems more than happy playing the role that is needed.
Give Keith comfort
Keith has had highs and lows this split. He started off with some rough Tahm Kench games and right away people were calling for his head. However, he turned around and has shown a surprisingly strong Thresh and the ability to create plays. Depending on the matchups, making sure he is on a champion he is comfortable with is a must. Not only can they not afford for him to int away the main carries lane, but also he has been a decisive factor in several of GGS wins. There most likely are additional champions in the pool for him; however, as of now mixing it up has not seemed to work for them. If Keith can play another champion like Thresh and still create plays on his own, that’s even better than just stabilizing the lane and farming for late game. Either way, he could have a major impact on the team’s performance, either good or bad.
Let FBI carry
FBI has been one of the strongest ADCs in the league this split. Highlight moments like the dragon fight versus Dignitas or 2v2ing Team Liquid have helped him stand out. Additionally, he’s near the top of the leaderboards in gold at 15 and % damage share. Golden Guardians have looked the strongest when he’s able to play a strong teamfighter like Aphelios, although fans will have to wait and see if nerfs have any effect on this. He hasn’t played terribly on less carry oriented champions like Ezreal, but it does not seem to suit the team as well. Overall, he has consistently been the main source of damage for the team while also staying alive in fights. If he continues his current level, and Golden Guardians play around him, then he could be the driving force to push them into playoffs.
