The 2020 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the K’Lavon Chaisson 2020 NFL Draft profile.

Chaisson entered his LSU career as a very highly-rated high school prospect and battled through injuries to be a good draft prospect. His presence helped the Tigers’ defense immensely and he is now set for the 2020 NFL Draft.

As a freshman in 2017, Chaisson got his feet wet with 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. The Tigers won nine games that season, but lost in the Citrus Bowl. In 2018, Chaisson played in just one game before tearing his ACL and being lost for the season. He had one tackle for loss and one sack, as his team went on to win 10 games including the Fiesta Bowl over UCF. The Tigers won the National Championship in 2019 with Chaisson chipping in with 13.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He had an ankle injury, but was still able to get back on the field to help his team find glory.

Chaisson doesn’t have the greatest production for an edge-rushing prospect, but does have unique physical traits. He should be selected at some point in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Chaisson has great athleticism, which gives him an edge on most offensive linemen. He is explosive at the snap of the ball and that tends to carry throughout the play. His speed and quickness are tough to match. This helps him get to the quarterback, but his athleticism also helps him in his run defense.

While most draft prospects who play on the edge are mostly looked at for their ability to get to the quarterback, Chaisson is a solid run defender. He sets the edge well keeping running plays on the inside. His ability to shed shows up well and he can chase down ball carriers consistently. He also is a solid tackler to finish the play.

His football IQ is also very high. He recognizes plays well and adjusts to them. Chaisson is rarely fooled by misdirections or play actions and stays at home. His ability to recognize what an offense is trying to do will help him adjust to the NFL better.

Weaknesses

Lack of production is going to be the biggest thing holding Chaisson back. In 24 career games, he had just 9.5 sacks. For him to be worth an early first round pick, he has to get to the quarterback more consistently in the pros. He has the skills to be able to get to the quarterback, but he needs to put it all together.

Injury history will also be something NFL executives will need to look into. He tore his ACL in 2018 and dealt with an ankle injury in 2019. These should check out, but if he played hurt in 2019 it could explain his lack of production.

Chaisson needs to add a few things to his game to make him a more complete player. He should add some play strength, as he struggles with powerful offensive tackles. He can also work on his hand usage a little bit in order to beat stronger offensive tackles when they get their hands on him.
