Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger will undergo knee surgery after suffering a partial meniscus tear. The knee surgery will prevent him from participating in the start of the MLB season. There will be no timetable for his return to the mound until after the surgery takes place.
USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale tweeted the news on Friday morning.
Big blow to the Cleveland #Indians: Ace Mike Clevinger was diagnosed with a partial tear of his left medial meniscus and will undergo arthroscopic surgery today. He will miss the start of the season.

In his four-year career, Clevinger has earned 41-21 record with an ERA of 3.20. 2019 was his best season yet, with an ERA of 2.71 in 21 starts and 126.0 innings pitched.
He will be sorely missed in the Indians’ rotation, as the arthroscopic surgery is guaranteed to keep Clevinger out through spring training, and into the 2020 regular season. He was slated to be their number one starter, if spring training went as planned.
Since Corey Kluber was traded just before the new year, Clevinger was expected to be Cleveland’s new ace. Carlos Carrasco will likely move into the number one starting spot in his absence.
