Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has reportedly elected to undergo surgery on his foot injury.
The former MVP suffered a Lisfranc injury in Week 2’s loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has not returned to the field since. Reportedly, the injury has failed to progress, leaving surgery as the only option.
NFL Network’s Tiffany Blackmon was the first to report that Newton would go under the knife.

The timeframe for the surgery and Newton’s return is unclear. However, seeing as the Panthers will most likely miss the playoffs, the earliest he can return is next year.
After going 0-2 under Newton in the first two games of the season, Carolina started Kyle Allen at quarterback after Cam’s injury, and have stuck with him. Later in the season, it was up for debate whether or not Newton was healthy enough to play. Leaving the window open to speculation that the Panthers were ready to move on from him.
With news of the surgery, the quarterback controversy is all but put to rest. As it is doubtful Newton would undergo a Lisfranc operation if he did not feel it was necessary.
Among all of the turmoil, the Panthers fired head coach Ron Rivera after losing to the rebuilding Washington Redskins in Week 13. This extended their losing streak to four games, plummeting them to 5-7 and all but out of the playoff race.
Newton will again watch from the sidelines as the Panthers take on the Falcons on Sunday, December 8 in Week 14.
