The Washington Redskins fell to 0-5 after losing to the New England Patriots 33-7 on Sunday. This is the first time they’ve dropped five straight to start a season since 1954, when they finished with a record of 3-9.

Modern-day David vs Goliath
Entering Week 5, the Redskins were in the midst of another quarterback controversy. Head Coach Jay Gruden named Colt McCoy the starter against the Pats, despite the backup’s faulty history and lingering leg injury. In his first start of the season, McCoy completed 18/27 passes for 119 yards. He also threw an interception late in the first half that halted Washington’s momentum. There were a few spark plays here and there, but ultimately the passing game was rendered useless by the Patriots’ defense.
In recent weeks, the Redskins have struggled on the ground, but they definitely had their best rushing attack thus far on Sunday. Along with a 65-yard rush from WR Steven Sims, the other backs and McCoy combined for 80 yards, rounding the total to 145 for the day. Considering the Redskins’ previous average of just 50 yards per game, their ground game was a small positive in the loss.
However, there wasn’t much to build from as a team. Washington’s defense simply couldn’t contain any of New England’s receivers, as Tom Brady threw for nearly 350 yards and three touchdowns. Though the Redskins stole an interception, the Patriots’ offense ran over them all game. Their three runningbacks totaled 130 yards rushing; Sony Michel led the way with 91 yards and a touchdown. WR Julian Edelman torched the Redskins’ secondary as well, grabbing eight receptions, 110 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Rinse and Repeat
Though the scoreline and statistics were clearly in favor of the Patriots, there really wasn’t any hope for the Redskins in this matchup. The Pats came into Week 5 with a 4-0 record, while the Redskins were moping around at 0-4. The Patriots’ defense allowed under seven points per game through the first four weeks, while the Redskins allowed 29.5 points per game. Overall, this beat down was expected and likely won’t change much for Washington going forward. Jay Gruden and the Redskins are essentially taking things by the day at this point.
“If the key works on Monday, I’ll keep working,” Gruden said after Sunday’s brutal loss. This comes after many have called for Gruden’s job in recent weeks. Washington’s 0-5 start has many upset, but the fans have had enough.
I want Jay Gruden fired tonight. I want Dwayne Haskins starting next week. It’s the same ole same ole with the @Redskins

This is just one of many, many negative tweets toward Jay Gruden and the Redskins. It would be hard to blame Gruden for Sunday’s loss, though, considering the odds against him. The Patriots have been playing at a Super Bowl-caliber level this season, so it might not be the end of his tenure yet. However, a loss to the 0-5 Miami Dolphins in Week 6 might be enough to send more than just Gruden packing.
