The fantasy baseball championship is coming up, and may even be starting next week for some leagues. Through a long season, keeping up with the waiver wire is important, especially for teams contending for a championship. Here are some players that may be available on the waiver wire in your league that can help for the championship:
Starlin Castro, 2B/3B, Miami Marlins
Starlin Castro has been hitting well lately. Through his first 11 games in September, he has a line of .268/.380/.659 with an OPS of 1.039. He has 11 hits, eight of which have gone for extra bases. Castro has brought his home run total up to 19 for the season. Even though the Marlins will not be in the postseason, Castro can still contribute to championship week in fantasy baseball. He has an own percentage of about 40 in ESPN leagues.
Garrett Cooper, OF/1B, Miami Marlins
Another Marlin added to the list. Garrett Cooper has also been playing well in September for Miami. The 28-year-old has a slash line of .349/.378/.628 with an OPS of 1.006 through his first 10 games of September. Perhaps the Marlins are not playing under much pressure, and maybe this is contributing to their performance on the field. Cooper can be used at first base or the outfield, so that is another upside for him. He has an own percentage of about nine in ESPN leagues.
Scott Kingery, SS/OF/3B/2B, Philadelphia Phillies
Scott Kingery has been hitting for more power than usual lately. At the time of writing, he is currently at 19 home runs which is 11 more than his 2018 total of eight. He can also be played at many different positions which is helpful in fantasy baseball. The Phillies are in the Wild Card race, and Scott Kingery could potentially use that as a motivator to play well in these last few weeks of the regular season. Kingery has been getting at-bats from the five spot lately, and that could lead to some RBI opportunities for him. He has an own percentage of about 36 in ESPN leagues.
Hanser Alberto, SS/2B/3B, Baltimore Orioles
Hanser Alberto is quietly putting up some impressive stats with Baltimore this season. He has a line of .320/.342/.445 through his first 125 games of the season. The Orioles also have seven games scheduled in the upcoming week, which should give Alberto a decent amount of at-bats. The Orioles have one game against the Tigers, three with the Blue Jays and three against Seattle. These three teams do not currently have the best pitching staffs in the MLB, so Alberto can use that to his advantage which can lead to a solid championship performance. The 26-year-old is owned in about 23 percent of ESPN leagues.
Roberto Perez, C, Cleveland Indians
If you’re looking for a catcher that is widely available, Roberto Perez could be the guy. At the time of writing, Perez’s 22 long balls is good for fifth most by any catcher this season. Power from the catcher spot can really help owners in fantasy baseball, and Perez has shown it this season. The Indians have a series at home against the Tigers this week, and this could be an upside for Perez as going into the series, 1/3 of his hits against the Tigers went for extra bases. Perez has an own percentage of around eight in ESPN leagues.
