The Mariners have agreed to trade All-Star shortstop Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio, James Pazos, plus $1 million to pay Segura’s trade bonus to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Carlos Santana and former top prospect J.P Crawford.
Segura, the prize of the trade, finished 2018 hitting .304 with 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases. In 50 innings last year, reliever, James Pazos went 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 45 strikeouts. Juan Nicasio had a bloated 6.00 ERA last season, but was better than his number showed.
The Phillies were able to offload Carlos Santana’s contract without having to pay any money to the Mariners. Now they can move rising star Rhys Hoskins from left field back to his primary position at first. This is good news for Phillies fans and bad news for everyone else. Hoskins was a liability in the outfield last season and will do well back at first. Santana signed a three-year contract for 60 million last season and struggled in his first season away from Cleveland. He hit .229 with 24 home runs and finished with a 1.7 WAR. His WAR in 2017 was 3.4.
J.P. Crawford is a former top prospect who is full of potential but has struggled the past few years. The 23-year-old outfielder hit .214 with three home runs and 37 strikeouts in 117 at-bats in the majors last season. Crawford started in the majors last season but was sent down after a month. The Mariners are hoping that Crawford finally comes into his own as a star outfielder.
Seattle Mariners Jerry Dipoto had this to say about Santana and Crawford. “Carlos Santana has been among the most durable players in the big leagues over the last eight years and has been a fixture in the middle of lineups during that time,”
“He gets on base, he does damage at the plate and is quite an underrated first baseman. J.P. Crawford gives us a young shortstop who is very athletic and fills up the toolbox; he hits, he runs, he plays defense, he throws, he has power. For the last four running, he’s been among the top 20 prospects in baseball.”
The Phillies now have even more money to spend on Manny Machado and Bryce Harper with this trade.
