Jaylon Tyson, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 20th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, wasn’t expected to be much of a difference maker. At least, not right away. In his first few games, however, he’s shown that there may be more to him than initially projected. Putting up a string of impressive performances may just land him a spot in the NBA. Looking at his early performances and his potential role in Cleveland, here’s a look at Jaylon Tyson’s early breakout.
Early performances
Tyson has managed not only to live up to expectations, but has exceeded them. In his first game against the Orlando Magic, he scored 15 points with eights rebounds and two assists.
He posted a similarly balanced stat line the following game against the Milwaukee Bucks. With 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Tyson was quick to establish himself as an effective player.
Last night, however, against the Los Angeles Lakers, Tyson had his best performance yet. With 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, he almost had a triple-double three games into his NBA career. Sure it’s the summer league, but this is still incredibly impressive for a player of his caliber. So far he’s averaging 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and five assists per game.
Especially considering he finished with team highs in points, rebounds and assists, the quality of his play is emphasized by the more seasoned talent around him. He is not as experienced as many of his teammates, but he’s still able to outplay them if needed.
His three-point shooting leaves room for improvement, as he’s made only four in three games, but this will no doubt be addressed. Even without a steady shot, though, he could prove to be a player with a lot to offer.
Tyson’s potential role in Cleveland
Although Tyson was originally expected to spend the majority of his season with the Cleveland Charge, this kind of play could easily find him in the NBA sooner rather than later. This is particularly true with Cleveland’s current roster construction.
Being both front-and-backcourt heavy, there’s a talent gap at small forward. Tyson could very well be slotted into the starting spot if his versatile play persists, as it’s exactly what the Cavaliers need.
Already being an elite defensive team with a potent offense, there isn’t any one particular thing the Cavaliers need to address this offseason. Rather, they need players who better compliment the teams’ style of play.
A player like Tyson, with a deep toolbox and able to adapt to different roles based on what is needed on any given night, is a perfect fit for this team. But for now, he’s focused on winning Cleveland their second consecutive Summer League Championship.
Tyson and the Cavaliers play next this Saturday at 5:00 pm against the Indians Pacers.
