The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a five-year contract extension with Teuvo Teravainen. The extension is worth $27 million with the average annual value of $5.4 million. The new contract begins next season and extends through the 2023-2024 season. Teravainen would’ve been a Restricted Free Agent (RFA) on July 1. The Finnish forward is currently second on his team in assists (28) and total points (38).
Before joining the Hurricanes, Teravainen was drafted 18th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. During his time with the Blackhawks, he became the fourth-youngest player (20 years, 265 days) to score a goal in a Stanley Cup Final. He ended up winning the 2015 Stanley Cup against the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring ten points in the playoffs.
On June 15, 2016, Teravainen was traded to the Hurricanes along with Brian Bickell for a 2016 second-round pick and 2017 third-round pick. Since being acquired by the Hurricanes he has appeared in 210 games, leading the team with 96 assists and second in points with a 144. He is also useful on the defensive side of the game contributing as a penalty-killing forward.
“He has shown that he is capable of adapting and expanding his role with our team, becoming a key penalty-killer for [coach] Rod [Brind’Amour] this season. He’s still just 24 years old and we believe he will only continue to grow as a player.” Hurricanes president and GM Don Waddell said in a statement.
With his extension, he is now the highest-paid player of the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes will be having a busy offseason with Sebastian Aho, Michael Ferland and captain Justin Williams scheduled to become restricted and unrestricted free agents this summer. Locking up Teravainen long-term shows the Hurricanes commitment for now and the future.
