After over a month of waiting, Lou Lamoriello addressed the media after the Islanders’ first round defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes. Islanders fans were left looking for answers during the hiatus, such as whether or not Lane Lambert was sticking as head coach, what roster changes could we expect and what the vision is for next season and beyond. While Lamoriello did not tip his hand entirely, his press conference few clues as to what we can expect for the Islanders this summer.
No Changes at the Top:
Lamoriello confirmed that both he and head coach Lane Lambert are under contract for next season. He said, “We’re both under contract. Have been and will be.” While it may be surprising for some, it’s also not surprising they’re staying put. They’ve guided the Islanders back on the map, so their presence will remain until they fall out of favor. However, there are also potential changes for Lambert’s staff. He called the coaching staff’s efforts “reasonably good,” and didn’t fully commit to all parties involved coming back. Considering their struggles on special teams in the playoffs, those decisions may still be pending.
Status of Pending Free Agents:
Lambert did not announce any extensions today but set his priorities clear. The team has a handful of notable free agents, including forwards Zach Parise and Pierre Engvall, defenseman Scott Mayfield, and goalie Semyon Varlamov. Lamoriello said, “We’ll certainly work at it, whatever time it takes and effort,” and it’s important to do make progress before free agency opens. All four players make up significant parts of their roster, so to have those questions answered quickly is important. Other free agents include Parker Wotherspoon and Sam Bolduc. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who is an unrestricted free agent next season, has not discussed a new contract yet, but Lamoriello is hoping to keep him long term.
The Josh Bailey Situation:
A player whose status as an Islander is in doubt is Josh Bailey. Bailey, 33, has seen his production decline the past two seasons and went to the press box for stretches last season. With Bailey on the books for a $5 million cap hit, the Islanders may look to move him this summer. Lamoriello said, “In Josh’s case, it looks like, maybe it’s near the end here,” and he will do what’s best for the team moving forward. Bailey played in his 1,000th NHL game this past season, only the third Islander to accomplish the feat, and sits in the top 10 in points and assists in franchise history.
While the press conference didn’t answer all questions Islanders fans may have had, Lamoriello gave a few clues as to what’s next for the Islanders. He acknowledged faith in his team but also acknowledged shortcomings in inconsistencies and a few roster spots. As the offseason begins, his actions will be vital for the Islanders’ contending status for next season and beyond.
