After an exciting round 1 of the 2022 NHL Playoffs, now it is time for Round 2. Here are the 2022 NHL Round 2 Playoff Predictions.
Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers
Carolina Hurricanes | New York Rangers
3-1-0 | Head-to-Head | 1-3-0 |
.707 | Points % | .671 |
3.38 | Goals for per game | 3.05 |
2.44 | Goals against per game | 2.49 |
22.0% | Power play | 25.2% |
88.0% | Penalty Kill | 82.3% |
The Carolina Hurricanes look to continue their surge as they face the young, relentless New York Rangers. Both the Hurricanes and Rangers are coming off of intense Game 7s in the first round of the playoffs, the Hurricanes defeating the experienced Boston Bruins team and the Rangers coming back from 3-1 to eliminate the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Despite the Rangers’ comeback in round one, this second-round matchup should be fairly easy to predict. The Rangers did not look impressive at all versus the injury-riddled Penguins team, getting outplayed most games. Based on team stats, the Hurricanes blow the Rangers out of the water and this gap will be even larger when Hurricanes starting goaltender Frederik Andersen returns from injury. If the Rangers stay on a hot streak, they have a chance at making this series competitive but looking where it stands right now, the Hurricanes should be able to sweep away the Rangers.
Prediction: Hurricanes in 5
Florida Panthers vs Tampa Bay Lightning
Florida Panthers | Tampa Bay Lightning
2-1-1 | Head-to-Head | 2-2-0 |
.744 | Points % | .671 |
4.11 | Goals for per game | 3.48 |
2.95 | Goals against per game | 2.78 |
24.4% | Power play | 23.9% |
79.5% | Penalty Kill | 80.6% |
Here it is, Part Two of the Battle of Florida. In the 2021 Playoffs, we saw these cross-state rivals fight it out for the first time in the playoffs before the Lightning were able to fend off the feisty Panthers en route to back-to-back Stanley Cups. But this year, the script is flipped. The juggernaut Florida Panthers are looking to repel the relentless Lightning squad. On paper, these teams match up perfectly, the Panthers being stronger offensively but the Lightning being better defensively and goaltending. The big storyline for this series is the health of Lightning star center Brayden Point who is expected to miss the first couple of games this round after being injured in Game 7 versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. This series can really go either way, to the President Trophy winner or to the back-to-back champs, but in the end, experience beats skill this time. The Lightning will narrowly defeat the Panthers to move on to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Prediction: Lightning in 7
Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues
Colorado Avalanche | St. Louis Blues
2-1-0 | Head-to-Head | 1-2-0 |
.726 | Points % | .665 |
3.76 | Goals for per game | 3.77 |
2.83 | Goals against per game | 2.91 |
24.0% | Power play | 27.0% |
79.7% | Penalty Kill | 84.1% |
It’s a rematch from the 2021 Playoffs first round, this time the series will be a whole lot more interesting. Last year, the Avalanche easily swept the St. Louis Blues in four games, but the Blues improved their roster and looked for revenge on the mighty Avalanche. The team statistics for this series are even, with no team having a significant advantage over the other. Comparing the two rosters, the Avalanche have more star power while the Blues have more forward depth. Defensively and goaltending, however, the Avalanche have an evident advantage and that will likely end up being the deciding factor of the series. If the Blues are able to get consistent goaltending this series, they definitely have a chance at knocking out the juggernaut Avalanche. Until that happens, the Avalanche are clear favorites to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2002.
Prediction: Avalanche in 6
Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers
Calgary Flames | Edmonton Oilers
2-2-0 | Head-to-Head | 2-2-0 |
.667 | Points % | .634 |
3.55 | Goals for per game | 3.48 |
2.51 | Goals against per game | 3.06 |
22.9% | Power play | 26.0% |
83.2% | Penalty Kill | 79.4% |
The Battle of Alberta is always heated when flames and oil mix together. For the first time since 1991, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers will face each other in a cross-provincial fight to determine which of these two teams will advance to the Western Conference Finals. These teams are coming off of big Game 7 victories and are now looking to send their rivals packing home. Breaking down this matchup, the Calgary Flames have been the better team throughout the regular season. The Flames have more scoring, forward depth, better defense, and better goaltending. However, there are two things that the Oilers have that the Flames don’t have: Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. This series will come down to the wire but the deciding factor is the two Edmonton superstars who have been unreal in the playoffs. Going with the upset on this one and picking the Oilers in 7.
Prediction: Oilers in 7
