New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas is expected to begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. If he is placed on the PUP list, he will miss at least the first five games of the 2020 season. The Saints would likely due this to help him recover from an ankle surgery he received in the offseason.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
Saints’ WR Michael Thomas, who underwent off-season foot surgery, is expected to land on PUP, which will sideline him the first six weeks, per sources. Being that the Saints have an early bye, placing Thomas on PUP would sideline him for at least the first five games.

Thomas has already cemented a place among the great receivers to play the game in just five NFL seasons. He owns the NFL record for receptions in a season (149), has an Offensive Player of the Year award (2019), led the league in receptions twice, has been selected to the First Team All-Pro twice and made three Pro Bowls.
He played in only seven games in 2020, starting in just five of them. Thomas suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 1 and was going to return in Week 5 before punching a teammate in practice. He eventually returned in Week 9, before being placed back on injured reserve and activated yet again for the playoffs.
The Saints will likely now make sure the ankle is fully healed after the surgery, lest they lose one of the best receivers in the game for even more time.
