Quarterback Marcus Mariota is being cut by the Atlanta Falcons, according to the team itself. This move comes just one year into Mariota’s Falcons tenure, despite having a two-year deal, but saves the team $12 million in cap space.
The Atlanta Falcons’ official Twitter account broke the news on Tuesday morning.
While playing quarterback for the University of Oregon, Mariota would go on to win the Heisman Trophy, among myriad other awards in 2014. He played in the very first College Football Playoff National Championship with Oregon as well.
After being drafted second overall by the Titans, Mariota played in Tennessee for five seasons before signing with the Raiders in 2020. He entered 11 games in the two years in which he played there, but never started. In 13 games for Atlanta, Mariota went 5-8, threw for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine picks.
