The Colts have made history by naming former center Jeff Saturday as their interim head coach. This is the first time in NFL history that a team has hired a head coach that has no previous coaching experience in any capacity.
ESPN’s Field Yates reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
Saturday was an undrafted free agent after the 1998 NFL Draft. He was initially signed by the Ravens’ practice squad only to be waived. He returned to civilian life for a year before the Colts signed him in 1999. Saturday played there from 1999 until 2011.
After spending one extra season with the Packers, Saturday retired after the 2012 campaign. In his heavily-decorated NFL tenure, he earned a Super Bowl ring, two First Team All-Pro selections and six Pro Bowl nods.
