Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett will miss the entire 2022-2023 season with an injury. An ACL tear suffered in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions is what will keep Barnett off the field. He continues his streak of never playing every game in a season with this missed time.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
The Eagles drafted Barnett with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. He was lucky enough to win the Super Bowl in his rookie year. In the game he recovered a fumble of Tom Brady’s after a strip sack by defensive line teammate Brandon Graham.
In his five NFL seasons, Barnett has played in just 64 of 81 games. He has started just 45 of those games. In addition to his ACL tear, he has also suffered shoulder and hamstring injuries which caused him to miss time. At the beginning of the 2022 season, Barnett signed a two-year contract extension.
