The Seattle Seahawks are losing another core part of their offense. Running back Chris Carson has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after a neck injury. Seattle will release him before his retirement, allowing him millions of dollars in “protection benefits.”
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
#Seahawks star RB Chris Carson is retiring from the NFL due to a neck injury, sources say.
SEA will officially release him with a failed physical designation. Under the CBA, that allows Carson to receive several million in injury protection benefits. Seattle does right by him.

Carson was a seventh round draft pick by the Seahawks in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State. He played his entire five-year career with Seattle. The neck injury causing Carson to retire took place in Week 4 of the 2021 season. He was placed on injured reserve when it became clear he needed surgery to repair the injury.
His best year came in 2019, when he played 15 games and racked up 1,230 yards and seven rushing touchdowns on 278 carries. Carson also had 266 receiving yards that season. In his four games in 2021, he had just 239 yards to finish out his career.
