McDuffie was one of the toughest corners in college football over the last three seasons at Washington. He is now headed to the 2022 NFL Draft.
As a four-star prospect out of California, McDuffie left the state to play for Washington. He started as a freshman, registering one interception and two passes defended. The Huskies went 8-5 with a win in the Las Vegas Bowl. In just four games played in 2020 due to COVID, McDuffie had one interception. He helped Washington go 3-1 in the shortened season. For the 2021 season, McDuffie had six passes defended. Unfortunately, Washington struggled and finished with a 4-8 record.
Following the season McDuffie declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. He is a projected first-round pick.
Trent McDuffie Strengths
McDuffie is a good athlete at the corner position. He has good short-area quickness, burst and agility. On top of that, he also has nice long speed and tested well in that area at the NFL Combine. All of these attributes help him match up well with the athletes in the NFL.
He played and excelled at both zone and man-to-man coverage. His athleticism helps him mirror well in man-to-man coverage. While he is solid in man-to-man coverage, McDuffie is even better in zone coverage. He uses his eyes well to read where the quarterback is going with the football. Then he demonstrates a good closing burst to force incompletions.
His playstyle is one of the more intriguing things about his game. He competes hard and isn’t afraid to do the dirty work. McDuffie can help out against the run and tackles well. He is capable of laying down some big hits and can help set the tone for a defense. Toughness is one of his biggest strengths.
Trent McDuffie Weaknesses
McDuffie doesn’t have the greatest size for a corner. He stands at 5-foot-11 and 193 pounds, which might make it tough to match up with bigger receivers. With his smaller size, also comes shorter arms, which measure in at under 30-inches. This makes it harder to attack the catch point.
As mentioned, McDuffie doesn’t really match up well with bigger receivers. His size makes it a tough matchups. He currently does his best to use his athleticism, but he could specifically be taken advantage of in the red zone.
He doesn’t make many plays on the ball. There are times when McDuffie’s size limits him, but also he sometimes struggles to track the ball. He will likely have more opportunities to improve in this area at the next level, as teams won’t be trying to avoid him as they did in college.
