1. Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina Tar Heels
North Carolina had a solid opener against Florida A&M winning 56-24. Downs used the week 0 game as an opportunity to build chemistry with new starting quarterback Drake Maye. He finished the game with nine receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
During the game, he showed he was a reliable target near the endzone. He was very productive last season and has the season started on the right foot. Playing well the rest of the season will help him solidify himself as a potential first-round pick.
2. Peter Skoronski, OT, Northwestern Wildcats
Northwestern was down, but stuck with it and came back to defeat Nebraska in Dublin. It took some good offensive line play, which was led by Peter Skoronski. Skoronski helped the Wildcats have over 300 passing yards and 200 rushing yards in the game.
During the matchup, Skornonski showed off his ability to absolutely move people in the run game. He also didn’t allow a sack. Skoronski is the most technically sound tackle in the class as things currently sit and should be a first-round draft pick.
3. Ochaun Mathis, EDGE, Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Cornhuskers may have a tough season ahead after losing the season opener to Northwestern. There were a few things to build off of though. Mathis had 10 tackles, although his impact on the game wasn’t the greatest. He struggled to get pressure on the quarterback and did not register a sack.
Mathis had a good season in 2020, but did not play well in 2021. He needs to turn things back on and soon in order to get his draft stock back up. Nebraska will also need him to step up his play, as they have to bounce back if they wish to make a bowl game.
4. Robert Scott, OT, Florida State Seminoles
Florida State had an easy game in week 0 and defeated Duquesne pretty easily 47-7. The offensive line played well, as the Seminoles rushed for 406 yards and passed for 232. Scott also played well, clearing holes in the running game and protecting Jordan Travis. He had an 87.1 PFF grade for the game.
The offensive line class is very unsettled heading into the season. Scott had a good first performance of the season and will need to build on that moving forward. The competition will be tougher as the season continues.
5. Aaron Frost, OT, Nevada Wolf Pack
The Wolf Pack were able to beat New Mexico State 23-12 in week 0. The offense struggled, as they had just 78 passing yards and 179 receiving yards on the day. Unfortunately, Frost was unable to play due to injury.
