Pickett was one of the most improved players in the country for the 2021 college football season. He is now one of the best quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft.
As a recruit, Pickett was rated at three stars and decided to stay close to home in New Jersey by enrolling at Pittsburgh. He played in four games, making one start as a true freshman, passing for 509 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The next season, Pickett took over the starting role, passing for 1,969 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions on 58.1 percent completion. The Panthers went 7-7 that season. He passed for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 61.6 percent completion in 2019. Pittsburgh improved their record to 8-5 and they capped off the season with a win in the Quick Lane Bowl. His development continued in 2020, as he passed for 2,408 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 61.1 percent completion. In a shortened season, Pitt went 6-5. Pickett really broke out in 2021 with 4,319 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 67.2 percent completion. The Panthers went 11-3 and had an appearance in the Peach Bowl to end the season.
During his final season, Pickett’s draft stock really rose. Now, he is a projected first or second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Kenny Pickett Strengths
Pickett has solid size for an NFL quarterback. He stands at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, which would be at about the average for NFL quarterbacks. His height allows him to see over the line of scrimmage and he has enough of a build to endure getting hit at the NFL level.
His accuracy is among the best in the class. It’s not just that he can hit receivers in stride so that they can run after the catch, but he also can throw to open space, allowing only his receiver to get the ball. He is accurate in the short and intermediate areas of the field, which helps his team move the chains and sustain drives. He has nice touch and can drop a ball in the bucket if asked.
He has the ability to extend plays. Pickett can escape the pocket, while keeping his eyes downfield, which leads to big plays. He is a threat to run as well, but does a really good job of keeping his options open. Pickett’s athleticism is among his best traits.
Kenny Pickett Weaknesses
Pickett’s arm strength won’t wow anyone. It would be best to label his arm strength as serviceable. He doesn’t have the arm strength to push the ball downfield consistently and will have trouble trying to power throws into tight windows.
While his risk-taking can be a good thing, Pickett’s mentality can get him in trouble. He tries to extend plays at times when he should just take a sack. Pickett also can throw into trouble in an attempt to salvage a play, which leads to turnovers.
His hand size will be brought into question during the pre-draft process. He could have trouble with gripping the football. Cold weather games could also be an issue. While he has proven to be able to deal ith smaller hands at the collegiate level, the next level could give him ball security issues.
Projected Draft Range:Â First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
