The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Cody Mauch 2023 NFL Draft Profile.
Cody Mauch Background
Position: Offensive Guard/Center
School: North Dakota State
Size: 6-foot-6, 303 pounds
Class: Senior
2022 stats: First Team All-American (FCS)
Mauch was around the North Dakota State program for six seasons, which allowed him to grow as a player. He is now in the 2023 NFL Draft.
After playing tight end, quarterback and defensive end in high school, Mauch signed on with North Dakota State and redshirted his first year on campus. Over the next two seasons he was a rotational player who saw time as a tackle and as a tight end. He played right and left tackle in the spring of 2021 and then played left tackle in the fall of 2021 when he was named Second Team All-American. In the fall of 2021, Mauch helped the Bison win the National Championship. For the 2022 season, Mauch returned at left tackle and was named First Team All-American. North Dakota State made it to the National Championship Game, but fell to South Dakota State.
Following the season, Mauch’s eligibility expired. He is now projected to be a day two pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Cody Mauch Strengths
Mauch has good athleticism for an offensive lineman. He has good flexibility and also has the movement skills to be successful at the next level. Mauch has the agility and acceleration to stay in front of pass rushers, but also the ability to get to the second level in the run game. The fact that he was a high school tight end and was still used in that capacity is apparent, as it shows through his athleticism.
His run blocking is more advanced than his pass blocking right now. Mauch is aggressive as he can make his block and then is able to get to the second level. He executes his assignments well in the run game. If he is moved inside to guard, he could be very successful if asked to pull because of his mobility.
He has solid awareness for an offensive lineman as well. Mauch shows a good knowledge of where blitzers are coming from and is able to pick them up. He does well when defensive lines stunt and twist, so his awareness comes in play a lot. His understanding could help him see the field early in his career.
Cody Mauch Weaknesses
Mauch lacks length, which is why he is projected to move to guard at the next level. Defenders can shed and get after the quarterback against him. He hasn’t shown the patience to let defenders come to him, which is necessary with his below-average length.
Whether he stays at tackle or especially if he moves inside to guard, Mauch will need to add more strength to his frame. He has trouble with power rushers and could move people more in the run game. On the outside, his athleticism allowed him to win, but if he moves inside, he will need this strength to hold up against bigger defensive linemen.
There are some changes to his technique that will need to be improved. His footwork needs to be cleaned up as a pass blocker. He could have better kick slides that help him retain his power. Along with his feet, his hands could have better placement and timing. All of this will help him become a more proficient pass blocker.
