School: Army
Size: 6-foot-6, 265 pounds
Class: Senior
2022 Stats: 41 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 passes defended
Carter II is a unique prospect because he played at a service academy. After a productive career at Army, Carter II is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As an unranked recruit out of high school, he signed with Army out of Texas. He did not play as a freshman, but did see time as a sophomore with 14 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack. Carter II had a great year in the starting lineup in 2021. He totaled 41 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks. Army went 9-4 behind Carter’s good play. In 2022, Carter II had 41 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. His play helped Army go 6-6 on the year.
Following some policy changes that limited prospects’ eligibility out of service academies, Carter II entered the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a projected day-two pick.
Andre Carter II Strengths
Carter has a good frame for an NFL edge rushers. He stands at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, which is solid for his position. Along with his solid frame, he has great length. He is able to use his length to disengage from blocks and be a threat as a pass rusher.
He has a very quick first step at the snap of the ball. Carter II’s ability to jump at the snap gives him an edge, as opposing offensive linemen have to react to that quickness. Seeing that he already has quickness in his game, that just makes him more of a threat as a pass rusher.
His athleticism is great for the position as well. Carter has the initial quickness, but he also has speed and lateral agility to go with it, which makes him a tough matchup to block. His movement skills are good, but so too is his flexibility. Carter II showed the ability to bend around the edge and get to the quarterback at the collegiate level.
Andre Carter II Weaknesses
While he has a solid starting frame for the next level, Carter needs to add strength to be an every-down player at the next level. He can struggle to shed blocks and does struggle going up against stronger defensive tackles. Adding strength will make him a more well-rounded player.
His pass rush production was great, but he struggles against the run. Carter II, as mentioned, can struggle to shed blocks. It looks like he could be more aggressive in trying to shed and then get to the ball carrier. What makes the problem a little worse is that Carter II sometimes has trouble bringing ball carriers to the ground with a good form tackle.
Once he was on the radar of opponents for the 2022 season, his sack production suffered. He struggled to get by with teams sending double teams and help to his side. In order to get better, he’ll need to add more pass-rush moves to his arsenal and improve his hand usage. He currently has a good swim and rip move, but needs more.
