The Los Angeles Lakers are striving to become a legitimate contender. In other words, they are trying to find the right pieces to compete with the likes of the Golden State Warriors or other teams capable of winning a championship. The Lakers have a young core around LeBron James, but they want more. Their young core could compete in a few years, or even make the playoffs this year. But, could the Lakers become a contender sooner? One way to become a contender is acquiring Anthony Davis.
This season, Anthony Davis has been connected to the Lakers. The Lakers are interested in acquiring Davis and it is closer to becoming a reality. The trade rumors started to heat up after Davis requested a trade. Davis even received a $50,000 fine for comments made by his agent Rich Paul. Anthony Davis is one of many players rumored to be interested in the Lakers. For example, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is another player with a possible interest in joining the Lakers.
On Monday, Adrian Wojnarowski discussed Klay Thompson joining the Lakers. Thompson’s interest depends on Golden State’s offseason plans. Thompson wants a max contract, but the Warriors may or may not offer it. The Warriors want to keep Thompson, but they also have to consider Kevin Durant. Durant has a player option this year and could opt out of his current contract. The Warriors may have to negotiate with both players. Or, they risk losing at least one of them.
Klay Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. If the Warriors do not offer him a max contract, the Lakers could land Thompson. It also depends on if the Lakers land Anthony Davis. If the Lakers acquire Davis, they have a better chance of getting Thompson, as he’ll likely gravitate towards a team with star power on it. With those three players, the Lakers could become the contender they want to become.
