Braun’s continual improvement over three college seasons eventually paid off. Now he is in the 2022 NBA Draft class.
Out of high school, he was a three-star prospect who was good enough to get a scholarship from his home state Jayhawks. He averaged 5.3 points and 2.9 rebounds as a reserve freshman. After entering the starting lineup as a sophomore, he put up 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. His role increased as a junior, as he averaged 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds. His play helped the Jayhawks win the 2022 National Championship to make it a great season.
Following the storybook ending to his college career, Braun declared for the 2022 NBA Draft. He is a projected late first-round pick or early second-round pick.
Christian Braun Strengths
Braun’s athleticism helps him in all areas of his game. He had the third-best vertical jump at the NBA Combine and that shows up on tape. His ability to jump helped him to become a good rebounder for Kansas and he can also finish at the rim with dunks. It also helps him get steals and go to finish in transition.
He also has a solid outside shot that can help stretch defenses. Braun shot 38.3 percent from behind the arc as a junior. He really showed he could shoot off the catch, as a lot of his made shots came off of Kansas point guards generating the shot. Specifically, he excelled in shooting threes from the top of the key and the corners.
As mentioned, his ability to impact the game as a rebounder is great for his size. He pulled down 6.5 rebounds per game last season for Kansas. Braun rebounds well on both ends of the floor, as he 1.4 of those rebounds per game were at the offensive end. He is not afraid to do the little things. like showing effort rebounding, to help his team win.
Christian Braun Weaknesses
Braun won’t create his own shot very often. A lot of his baskets were in transition or off of catch-and-shoot opportunities. He doesn’t have the dribble moves or the aggressiveness to get to the lane consistently and hasn’t shown the ability to shoot off the dribble at a high rate.
Unless he starts working on it now, Braun is likely a two-level scorer. He has the outside shot and he can finish at the rim, but he doesn’t attempt or make many shots from the mid-range. Braun can add that feature to his game early in his NBA career, as he may have a size advantage on some of his matchups to shoot over defenders.
He will be able to guard players who play guard, but won’t be a very switchable defender. His athleticism offers some help, but his length doesn’t match up with bigger wing players or bigs in the NBA. Braun will need to focus on fighting through screens, as switching could leave him at a disadvantage.
Projected Draft Range:Â Late First Round Pick-Early Second Round Pick
