Ausar Thompson Strengths
Thompson is a good athlete, which helps him in several different areas. He is good in transition, but also attacks the basket well in the halfcourt offense too. He can finish in transition or when things are slowed down as well. This athleticism allows him to stay in front of players when he is on defense.
His defense has some great potential for a few reasons. He has the athleticism to stay in front of drivers. Thompson also has a 7-foot wingspan, which will allow him to guard multiple positions on the perimeter. When he is off the ball, he shows good awareness to jump passing lanes and generate steals.
For a guard, Thompson has shown to be a very good rebounder. He is able to box out and then shows good awareness of how the ball will come off the rim. Once it is free, he can high-point the ball and come down with the rebound. He also is solid on the offensive glass, but when he gets a defensive rebound he can immediately start pushing the ball in transition.
Ausar Thompson Weaknesses
Working on his 3-point shot will be required in Thompson’s development. He shot below 30 percent on 3-point attempts last season in the Overtime Elite League. Defenders can sag off of him and go under screens, which makes him much easier to guard.
He also needs to work on protecting the ball, as he averaged 3.3 turnovers per game last season. Thompson can make great passes, but also can take too many risks. If he can get that number down, or increase his assists, it would make him more efficient.
Thompson is a solid ball-handler, but doesn’t exactly create his own space. He can work on that to get more open shots and be more efficient. Thompson can also get more experience running pick and rolls to fit into more of the NBA playstyle.
