Here are three things to watch for this week as the Yankees take on the Rays and the Marlins.
American League Wild Card Race
The Yankees are nine games out of the division lead after blowing a four run lead to the Red Sox on Sunday. If they’re going to play in October, it’s looking like it will be in the Wild Card game. They are currently 3.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot. The Rays and Athletics currently hold the Wild Card spots, while the Mariners are two games ahead of New York. Yankees fans should keep watch on how those teams are performing. The Yankees will start their week with a chance to get closer to a Wild Card spot as they take on the Rays.
Opportunistic Weekend
After playing in Tampa Bay, the Yankees will head to Miami to take on the Marlins. The Marlins are currently in last place in their division. This could be an opportunity for the Yankees to end their road trip with a sweep and head back home on a winning streak. The Yankees will host the Orioles before a huge four-game set with the Mariners in the Bronx next week. A successful week in Florida could help kick start a hot streak for the Yankees.
The Trade Deadline
Although the Yankees, haven’t made any big trades yet, there are still some names in the mix that could head to New York. Two that have been in rumors are Joey Gallo and Trevor Story. These guys are both veterans on struggling teams. With Joey Gallo’s power and lefty bat, he could take advantage of the short porch in right field. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do this week in the 2021 trade deadline.
