Gomes spent 2021 with both the Washington Nationals and the Oakland A’s. He was moved at the trade deadline as the Nationals began a post-World Series championship rebuild. Gomes was an offseason acquisition for the 2019 World Series champion Washington team.
Willson Contreras will more than likely be the everyday catcher for the Cubs, so Gomes is firmly in a backup role with Chicago. The Cubs are acquiring him ahead of his 10th MLB season, putting Gomes firmly in the veteran backup category, which is always important at catcher.
