Soto, 23, has a .291 batting average with 119 home runs and 358 RBIs over five seasons with the Nationals. This season he is batting .246 with 21 home runs and 46 RBIs.
Bell, 29, is batting .301 this season for the Nationals with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs. He has a .266 career batting average.
The outfielder joins the Padres, who are making a push to compete for a World Series. They currently have a 58-46 record and have filled the team with superstars. San Diego already acquired closer Josh Hader before the trade deadline.
Washington and Soto couldn’t agree to a long-term deal, which opened him up to the trade market. After trading Soto, the Nationals are going into a rebuild with plenty of prospects returning.
Hassell II is the 21st ranked prospect (MLB pipeline), while Wood is 88th. Gore, 23, has a 4-4 record and 4.5 ERA for the Padres this season. Abrams, 21, is batting .235 with two home runs and 11 RBIs this season. Susana has a 2.45 ERA in Rookie League.
Eric Hosmer was originally included in the trade, but had Washington on his don’t trade list in his contract.
