The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Philadelphia Phillies.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
Phillies 2022 Season Review
The Philadelphia Phillies made it all the way to the 2022 World Series despite finishing third in the NL east with a record of 87-75. They would go on to lose the Fall Classic to the Houston Astros in six games.
2023 Projected Pitching Rotation
1. Aaron Nola
2022 stats: 11-13, 3.25 ERA, 205.0 IP, 74 ER
Nola ended up finishing fourth in Cy Young voting last season, leading the league in fewest walks per nine innings and most strikeouts per walks given up. He also pitched two complete games and a complete game shutout in 2022.
2. Zack Wheeler
2022 stats: 12-7, 2.82 ERA, 153.0 IP, 48 ER
Wheeler’s 2022 season was his third consecutive campaign with an ERA under 3.00. 2021 was his best year, when he earned an All-Star appearance and finished second in Cy Young voting. He also led the league in complete games, shutouts, innings pitched, strikeouts and batters faced.
3. Taijuan Walker
2022 stats: 12-5, 3.49 ERA, 157.1 IP, 61 ER
Walker notched the most wins of his career last season. He also pitched the third-most innings of his career in 2022, and is joining the Phillies after bouncing around to four different teams since 2013.
4. Ranger Suarez
2022 stats: 10-7, 3.65 ERA, 155.1 IP, 63 ER
Suarez’s innings pitched have steadily inclined since his rookie season in 2018 (apart from 2020, in which he pitched just four). In over 155 innings, he racked up 129 strikeouts, which was a career high.
5. Bailey Falter
2022 stats: 6-4, 3.86 ERA, 84.0 IP, 36 ER
Falter’s second MLB season was a big improvement over his rookie campaign. His ERA fell dramatically, despite pitching more innings. He started 16 games, appearing in 20 and winning six.
