Givens, 31, has a 2.73 ERA this season. He has spent the last year with the Rockies, but before that he played for the Baltimore Orioles. He has a career ERA of 3.36.
In return, the Reds will send their 20th-ranked prospect according to mlb.com Case Williams. Williams originally went to the Reds in a deal that included Jeff Hoffman for Robert Stephenson. The Rockies are also getting a Single-A pitcher according to Jon Heyman.
The righty will help a Reds bullpen that is the worst in the league with an ERA of 5.36. Cincinnati also made a deal earlier on Wednesday to bring Luis Cessa and Justin Wilson in from the Yankees for a player to be named later.
Givens is on a one-year $4 million deal. The Reds will pay the remaining $1.4 million of that deal.
