Wide receiver Chris Godwin has been franchise tagged by the Buccaneers. The franchise tag will earn Godwin $16 million for the 2021 season, but he will only be under contract for the 2021-2022 season. He will have to sign another deal next year if Tampa wishes to retain his services.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Godwin was a key piece to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl for the 2020-2021 season. He racked up 840 yards on 65 receptions and scored seven receiving touchdowns. Due to the talent on the roster, he had to take a secondary role on the offense this year, but still put up numbers that would spell a career year for most receivers.
Last season, Godwin had 1,333 yards and 9 touchdowns and became part of the only receiver duo in history to both make the Pro Bowl on the same team. He is clearly a priority for the franchise and Tampa wants to keep him around to take another run at the Super Bowl.
