The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Chicago White Sox.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
White Sox 2022 Season Review
The White Sox finished 2022 with a record of 81-81, placing second in the AL Central. They ended up missing the postseason by just five games after two consecutive appearances. Manager Tony La Russa retired on August 31 due to medical reasons after a 33-season career.
2023 Projected Pitching Rotation
1. Dylan Cease
2022 stats: 14-8, 2.20 ERA, 184.0 IP, 45 ER
Cease became an ace in 2022. He set career marks in wins, ERA and innings pitched last year on his way to second place in Cy Young voting. Barring injury, he’ll start Opening Day.
2. Lance Lynn
2022 stats: 8-7, 3.99 ERA, 121.2 IP, 54 ER
Lynn wasn’t quite the All-Star he was in 2021, but still had a solid enough season to trust him into 2023. Lynn finished top 6 in Cy Young voting from 2019-2021.
3. Lucas Giolito
2022 stats: 11-9, 4.90 ERA, 161.2 IP, 88 ER
Giolito also had a down year, with his worst ERA since 2018. He, like Lynn, also had Cy Young placings in 2019-2021. This will be his sixth year as a starter for the White Sox.
4. Mike Clevinger
2022 stats: 7-7, 4.33 ERA, 114.1 IP, 55 ER
Clevinger enters his first year in Chicago off of his worst season ERA-wise as a starting pitcher. He pitched over 114 innings in 2022, after pitching a total of just 41.2 innings in the past two seasons combined.
5. Michael Kopech
2022 stats: 5-9, 3.54 ERA, 119.1 IP, 47 ER
Kopech’s 119.1 innings pitched marked a career high. The 26-year-old also had his second-straight 100-plus strikeout season.
