After having a strong three game winning streak, Golden Guardians faltered this weekend going 0-2. Their main carries this split have been Goldenglue and FBI, and they took turns struggling on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Against FlyQuest they stuck to a comp that had shown previous success for them, but they were shut down by POE and Wildturtle. Then, against 100 Thieves GGS appeared to try something completely new with Keith on Yuumi and Closer on full damage Olaf. Unfortunately, the game did not end as they had hoped with everyone but Goldenglue dying over three times.
FlyQuest vs. Golden Guardians
Result: L (5-4)
GGS started with a draft that has fit their playstyle so far this split. Hauntzer had yet another Aatrox game, and Closer was on a playmaker in Lee Sin. Keith was able to get his best champion (so far) Thresh, and FBI was on the powerful Miss Fortune. Goldenglue has had some shaky games on Zoe this split, and unfortunately the streak continued. PowerOfEvil took over the game with one of his signature picks, Orianma, and Ignar continued to look strong. With impressive engages on Rakan, he is in the running for the number one support in the LCS. Viper got ahead enough on Sett that he was pretty much unkillable, and POE flame horizoned Goldenglue. Overall, FlyQuest looked like a better veteran team that deserves to be number two in the league, and GGS looked like a team that has new players and is still working out some kinks.
100 Thieves vs. Golden Guardians
Result: L (5-5)
After GGS seemed to have found a solid team identity, they tried something completely new. With Keith on an enchanter and FBI on a passive ADC in Ezreal, it appeared the plan was for the full damage Olaf to carry. Goldenglue had his best Zoe game of the split but was the only player who showed up. Ssumday counterpicked Hauntzer and proceeded to dumpster him harder then Clutch Gaming at worlds. Additionally, Closer seemed to play Olaf like he was a tank and died faster than expected. After getting a small lead in the mid game, GGS spent several minutes getting picked off one by one and was never able to recover. Golden Guardians couldn’t match Ssumdays split push pressure, and they couldn’t force a push on the other part of the map.. Only time will tell if experimental comps like this will succeed on stage for GGS.
Looking Ahead
Immortals (5-5)
Immortals has gone on a similar skid as GGS and is one game above them in the standings. Golden Guardians will need strong performances from their carries Goldenglue and FBI, who have good matchups into Immortals. Eika has not started strong in the LCS, and Altec has looked unimpressive in his return to the stage. Veteran jungler Xmithie may be a tough matchup for Closer, but fortunately GGS does not rely on him to carry. With the middle of the LCS so crowded, this is a key game if Golden Guardians wants to move up in the standings.
Evil Geniuses (5-5)
EG had been on a hot streak with three wins in a row before their latest loss on Monday Night League. Bang showed off his world class Ezreal, and Jizuke looks more like a mid laner who has performed on the international stage. Golden Guardians must win this game if they want to keep pace with the pack. Although mid and bot will have tougher matchups, Hauntzer may be able to pop off against rookie Kumo in the top lane. Even if GGS drafts like they did during their win streak, they may have a hard time versus this team.
