After just one year with the EU Super-team, Carl “Rekkles” Larsson has been let go from G2. This comes after an incredibly disappointing Summer Split, placing 4th. The news was announced with a video:
Rekkles has been one of the most interesting stories of the entire offseason. As of now, Rekless does not have a team in the LEC. He does though seem to be headed to Karmine Corp in the LFL according to Upcomer. This is obviously quite the shock. Rekkles won MVP in the LEC in the Spring and is now not even on a team. The LFL is a very popular league, but it is nowhere near the LEC. Furthermore, it is impossible for Rekkles to make Worlds.
A Changing G2:
G2 deciding to sell Rekkles is indicitive of the change in the team. G2’s owner, Carlos, has been open about the team wanted to rebuild. For Carlos, winning is the only thing that matters. If the team isn’t winning, they need to rebuild. G2 went all in with Rekkles in 2021 and it toppled. G2 was no longer the dominant giant it was in 2018, 2019 and 2020, they didn’t even make Worlds or MSI.
In the offseason, G2 has decided to move on from 3 of their players. This includes Mikyx, Wunder and now Rekkles.
Can Rekkles Make It Back?
One of the biggest questions left in the air with this move is if Rekkles can make it back to the LEC. This year, probably not, but next year, anything is possible. There are currently talks of the LEC expanding. This move was going to happen in 2020, but due to Covid, it was delayed. Karmine Corp is one of the top contenders for one of the two rumored spots. There is a world where Rekkles makes it back to the LEC while staying on Karmine.
