The free agency period can be a crazy time, and sometimes even the strongest teams have to make tough choices. In the case of the 2020 World Champions, DAMWON Kia, the time had come to make the most surprising cut so far. On Monday November 15, Ashley Kang of Korizon Esports first reported that DAMWON Kia’s ShowMaker, Canyon and BeryL would be entering free agency. The trio helped DAMWON Kia reach the finals of this year’s World Championship, but ultimately fell to Edward Gaming.

ShowMaker, Canyon and BeryL were a core part of DAMWON’s LCK championship run. The three players have played for DAMWON Kia for the past two years. In 2020, DAMWON Kia would go on to win Worlds over Suning in a decisive 3-1 series. The same core came back for 2021, where they would eventually reach the finals once again at Worlds. However this time around, the MSI winners couldn’t pull off the back-to-back championships.

The release of these three players leaves the LCK in an interesting position in terms of roster construction. There are many teams that would receive an immediate upgrade at the mid lane or jungle role by signing either ShowMaker or Canyon. While BeryL had some tough games this past season, he served as one of the key pieces for DK’s dominance this year.
With these three heading into the free agent pool, there is no doubt that any team would be lucky to have one of these players. It will be interesting to see how DAMWON decides to build their roster after letting some of the top talent in the league explore free agency.
