After announcing that he was leaving the LCK casting desk last week, many wondered where PapaSmithy would be heading next. In a surprise move he has signed with 100 Thieves as their General Manager. This comes less than a week after owner Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag announced that his team would not be joining the new Call of Duty Franchising League.
PapaSmithy has been a part of the LCK English casting crew since 2015 and has made a name for himself as one of the most well-informed casters in the world. His deep analysis has provided enjoyment for fans around the world for years and many wondered if him leaving the LCK meant the LEC or LCS were his next stop. Instead he will be using his incredible analysis to make the 100 Thieves League of Legends teams one of the best in the LCS.
100 Thieves finished their Summer Split outside of playoffs. With their roster currently in limbo for next year, PapaSmithy brings a lot to the table for the team. While they aren’t the worst team in the league, 100 Thieves have an uphill battle for 2020. As General Manager, PapaSmithy should help guide their team along the right path for the 2020 season. With a background in psychology, PapaSmithy could be a key factor for team mental, something that plagues many teams across the world.
100 Thieves have been making a lot of moves even with their decision not to join the CWL. They recently signed streamer Hammoundi “Moe” “Yassuo” A. as their first full time team streamer. They have also always been ahead of the curve of most organizations and are willing to draw on talent from anywhere. For example while Neil “pr0lly” Hammond coached and played in League of Legends before joining 100 Thieves, assistant coach Kelsey Moser was originally a League of Legends journalist. PapaSmithy joins them and brings yet another perspective as he has spent his entire career as a caster.
With this signing it will be interesting to see how PapaSmithy uses his General Manager title. Will it be more of a coaching type position like Parth “Parth” Naidu has with TSM? Or will he more oversee everything and let the coaches and analysts do their thing? Either way PapaSmithy has a team that was starting to figure it out during the summer and it will be worth watching what moves he makes and what influence he has with 100 Thieves.
