What many fans have considered an absolute necessity in its past, Xbox Live Gold in 2022 seems to have suffered a shift in notoriety now becoming the laughing stock of Microsoft’s gaming subscription service.
Prime Days
For almost two decades Xbox Live Gold was seen by Xbox owners as a must-have subscription. It served as the ultimate gateway to the multiplayer experience that Xbox has to offer.
As a thank you to Xbox Live Gold members Microsoft gave Xbox Live subscribers Fable III, Defense Grid: The Awakening, and Assassin’s Creed II in 2013. These were the very early stages and the birth of Xbox’s Games With Gold feature granting subscription holders four new Xbox games monthly. Fans were happy with paying for Xbox Live Gold getting their money’s worth. Multiplayer experience and free games monthly, what’s not to like?
Gold Begins To Tarnish
Back in 2021, Microsoft decided to drop the Xbox Live Gold requirement on free-to-play multiplayer titles and open multiple social features to all players on Xbox. These features consisted of Party Chat and Looking for Group posts, the most popular social features on the platform. Players no longer need to pay the Xbox Live Gold monthly fee to play popular titles at the time such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, or Apex Legends along with other titles. Depending on the pay style certain gamers could now potentially be wasting their money. Although no payment was required for these popular titles other Xbox games still require Xbox Live Gold. These changes to the subscription service dramatically dropped it in value as various features that were once exclusive were now made available to everyone.
The Nail In The Coffin
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate gives gamers a library of hundreds of games that they can play across Xbox, PC, Android, and IOS which also includes all first-party Microsoft releases as soon as they come out. On top of that, all of the perks of Gold are included. When this new subscription service came out gamers were unsure of how it would perform but in 2022 everyone now knows its name and the power it holds having Xbox Live Gold writing up its will.
With the success of GamePass Ultimate, it’s now clear where Microsoft has its attention geared towards. Players continually see new and popular titles being added to the service but what about Games With Gold? While Microsoft pampers with its Game Pass subscription holders with its exciting titles gold subscribers are left with old and forgotten games from Xbox’s past.
March 2022 Games With Gold
As with previous months, Xbox Live Gold along with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. March’s platter of titles to no surprise, for fans, are indie games and older titles.
The first two games coming in March are The Flame in the Flood a roguelike survival adventure game and Sacred 2 Fallen Angel an action role-playing game set in a fantasy world.
Free from March 16 until April 15 Is Street Power Soccer, an arcade-style soccer game, and SpongeBob’s Truth or Square, an action game based on the TV show’s special.
Goodbye
If gamers want the most bang for their buck then without a doubt Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the way to go. It possesses all of the benefits of Gold in addition to hundreds of games you can play across an assortment of devices. While a gold subscription gets the job done it just can’t compete to game pass in 2022. It’s time to throw in the towel. Rest in power Xbox Live Gold.
