The Call of Duty League had its Major 3 Lan Tournament this past weekend and it saw another different champion. Continuing to prove surprising, the then sixth-place Seattle Surge became the third team to win a Major championship this year. Here is how the Seattle Surge became the Call of Duty Major 3 Tournament Champions.

The Surge have helped continue the trend of the league so far this year, there are going to be new champions. In every Major tournament in the Call of Duty League season thus far, there has been a new champion. After OpTic Texas Major 1, the Los Angeles Guerrillas’ magical run in Major 2 and now Seattle, Call of Duty Vanguard is a rollercoaster.
The winners, led by Makenzie “Mack” Kelley, Daunte “Sib” Gray, and Amer “Pred” Zulbeari, earned it by beating the Atlanta FaZe twice in order to do so. Seattle took the Grand Final 5-3, but many believe it was the 3-2 Winners Finals victory from Surge over FaZe that flipped the tide.
In Sunday’s Winners Bracket Finals match, the Atlanta FaZe had a 2-0 map count advantage and seemingly looked to have the sweep in hand.
With 14 seconds left on the clock and a 13 v 5 life advantage in a 2-2 Tuscan Control for FaZe, one more set of traded kills would be enough. It appeared they were ready for the final push from Surge, but they had a setup breakdown and then, Mack happened.
After Atlanta’s Chris “Simp” Lehr turned his back and ran from church ramp, to the point and eventually radio steps, leaving a gap.
Mack felt that space open and flew at it with a teammate right behind him. He managed to take out two members of FaZe, “Simp” and Tyler “AbeZy” Pharris, completely opening the map and giving Surge fans hope.
The other two Surge players picked up the other two kills and then the unthinkable was real, Seattle could force another map.
Seattle Surging
All three of Seattle’s players in the area immediately hopped onto the Control point. A couple of easily won pre-aim gunfights and Seattle captured the point, winning the map, forcing the series to a map 4.
In the hardpoint, the series now 2-1, FaZe had a demanding lead and surely looked to have the map closed out. They led 224-144 at one point late in the map and simply began to break down. The Surge went on a killing spree and came back to win the map 250-245, forcing a Map 5 SnD.
In this Map 5, FaZe did not have a chance.
Surge smoked them. A 6-1 round finish behind a 13-1 K/D from Pred, completing the reverse sweep.
The Grand Finals had exciting moments throughout and Seattle needed to prove they had ice at moments. A round 11 SnD win put them in a position to ultimately gain the victory.
The Seattle Surge are now ranked third in the CDL points standings after this victory and almost guaranteed a Call of Duty Champs spot.
Heading into the final stage of this Call of Duty League season the Surge are on an eight-match win streak. That streak will first be put to the test on Sunday, June 26th when they take on Paris Legion. From there, the Surge have a difficult schedule to prove they are for real.
Their next four matches will be against the Boston Breach, New York Subliners, Minnesota Rokkr and Atlanta FaZe.
