Riot Games has announced John Needham as their new Global Head of LoL Esports. He has been with Riot since 2017, and most recently was involved in the rebranding of the new LEC as the Managing Director of Europe and North America. This included not only a new name for the league and team franchising, but the introduction of multiple new sponsors like Kia, Red Bull, and Logitech.
“John’s global experience, track record with our regional esports leagues, and true passion for gaming will accelerate the evolution of League of Legends into one of the leading sports and entertainment properties in the world.” said Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent.
John will be replacing Jarred Kennedy and Whalen Rozelle, the recent Co-Heads of Esports. Under their management, LoL Esports has seen record growth, and the two will be staying with Riot Games in new leadership positions.
In it’s ninth season, League of Legends esports continues to expand globally, and currently has over 800 players on more than 100 teams, making up 13 regional leagues.
