Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology December 5.
CFP Four
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1)
Alabama defeated Georgia in the SEC Championship convincingly. It is the best win of the season and the Crimson Tide will be ranked at the top spot to avoid a possible first-round rematch with Georgia in the CFP.
2. Michigan Wolverines (12-1)
Jim Harbaugh now has a Big Ten Championship under his belt. The Wolverines got another big win and will have a case for the top spot, but ultimately the committee will not want a rematch of the SEC teams in the first round, so they’ll stay at no. 2.
3. Georgia Bulldogs (12-1)
Georgia had a tough game against Alabama, but because the Bulldogs went undefeated through the regular season, they still stay in the CFP.
4. Cincinnati Bearcats (13-0)
Cincinnati finished the season undefeated with their win over Houston in the AAC Championship Game. Their win over Notre Dame ironically keeps them ahead of the Fighting Irish in the final rankings and helps the Bearcats make the CFP.
First Four Out
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-1)
Notre Dame improved throughout the season. Without a conference championship game, the Fighting Irish have one less data point than other one-loss teams that are in the CFP and that might be the difference between being in or being out.
6. Baylor Bears (11-2)
In the Big 12 Championship Game, Baylor had a goal-line stand to win the game. Their two losses will leave them out of the CFP, but a New Year’s Six Bowl game is a great improvement over the 2020 season.
7. Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2)
Ohio State was a longshot to make the CFP after losing to Michigan. They needed a lot of help and didn’t get it. The Buckeyes will be in a New Year’s Six Bowl Game.
8. Ole Miss Rebels (10-2)
With two SEC teams already in the CFP, Ole Miss is in a position to make a New Year’s Six Bowl Game.
Next Four Out
9. Oklahoma State Cowboys (11-2)
Oklahoma State may have been in the CFP with a win, but a loss to Baylor has them on the outside looking in of the CFP. They will also be in a New Year’s Six Bowl Game.
10. Michigan State Spartans (10-2)
Michigan State had a great turnaround this season, but had one too many losses to make the CFP.
11. BYU Cougars (10-2)
BYU was able to get to 10 wins after losing Zach Wilson to the NFL. It isn’t enough for CFP consideration, but a good season nonetheless.
12. Oklahoma Sooners (10-2)
Oklahoma didn’t have the season they expected, but still won 10 wins and should be in a decent bowl game.
