Five-star recruit Keyonte George, the No. 2 player in the 2022 recruiting cycle according to 247sports, recently committed to Baylor.
With this commitment, the 6-foot-4 guard becomes the second-highest ranked prospect to ever commit to Baylor behind Isaiah Austin in 2012. George has been bumped to No. 2 player in the class of 2022 following the reclassifications of fellow recruits Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren. With a 99.89 rating, he is the top overall prospect at the shooting guard position in his class.
His four other finalists included Texas, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kentucky. He explained why he believed Baylor was the best fit for him in an interview with ESPN on Sunday.
“I felt like Baylor was the best fit for me as a scoring guard,” George said. “Seeing how they played this year shows that they let their guards go. They were already a winning culture and their playing style helped with my decision, but them winning it all didn’t play a part in it. It was mostly the relationship with Coach Drew and their play style. Their plan is to develop me and make me the best version of myself, help my team win and hopefully get to the next level.”
Duren spoke on how coach Scott Drew played a large factor in his decision to play for the Bears.
“Coach Drew is one of the most caring guys I’ve ever met,” he said. “He cares for his players, his coaching staff and everyone around the program. He just makes you feel like family.”
Impact
The addition of George is a huge pickup for the Bears. The combo guard has a tremendous offensive skillset and can knock down jumpers comfortably from anywhere on the floor. In high school, George averaged 24.8 points in 24 games for iSchool Entrepreneurial Academy.
247Sports analyst Brandon Jenkins compares George’s game to Minnesota Timberwolves star D’Angelo Russell.
“George is a smooth scoring guard who shows a high level of dedication to the game and looks to play the game the right way,” says Jenkins.
“He scores within the flow of an offense and can knock down jumpers from all three ranges on the floor. His in-between game is potent as he has the knack of getting to his spots to get his shot off. He uses his handle to wiggle his way into his pullup and has the explosiveness and body control to finish plays in a crowd. His game is built upon skill more than elite quickness. He plays with poise and makes sound decisions with the ball in his hands.”
With George, Baylor has a strong incoming 2021 class, as they’re rated No. 14 nationally. They’ll be receiving a five-star forward Kendall Brown as well as four-star guard Langston Love, and international four-star forward Jeremy Sochan.
