The bowl season gives fans and scouts alike a chance to analyze NFL Draft prospects against solid competition. The bowl season schedule allows all eyes to be on each game. Here are the NFL Draft prospects in the 2018 Valero Alamo Bowl.
Iowa State Cyclones Prospects
*Kyle Kempt suffered an injury and has not returned to his starting quarterback position. He is available to play, but is serving as the backup. He could still get a shot at the NFL with a draft range of sixth round to undrafted free agent.
David Montgomery, RB
Montgomery has been playing since he was a freshman, but has been a workhorse running back the last two seasons. At Iowa State, he has 2,801 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. This season he has rushed for 1,092 yards and 12 touchdowns
He has solid size for a running back at 5-foot-11 and 216 pounds. The junior will be selected in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft, but may elect to go back to Iowa State for his final year of eligibility.
Projected draft range: Third round-fifth round
Hakeem Butler, WR
Butler has been one of the best wide receivers in college football this season. In his career, he has recorded 101 receptions for 1,957 yards and 18 touchdowns. This season has been his best by far for Iowa State with 51 receptions for 1,126 yards and nine touchdowns. He is a big-play threat, averaging 22.1 yards per reception.
At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Butler has elite size that he uses to his advantage. His height and production will get him a bunch of NFL looks.
Projected draft range: Third round-fifth round
Marcel Spears, LB
Spears is a key player on the Iowa State defense and could be drafted this season. He has 171 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, three sacks, four interceptions, two touchdowns, six passes defended, one fumble recovered and one fumble forced. In 2018, he has 60 total tackles,6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, one touchdown, three passes defended and one fumble recovered.
He is a little slight for a linebacker at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, as he’ll need to add muscle for more NFL attention.
Projected draft range: Sixth round-undrafted free agent
Washington State Cougars Prospects
Andre Dillard, OT
Although he had the chance to go pro after last season, Dillard went back to Washington State. He has started at left tackle since his sophomore year, gaining valuable experience. He is a well-qualified pass blocker, but hasn’t received the same number of reps run blocking as other tackle prospects.
At 6-foot-5 and 306 pounds, Dillard has average size for a tackle. He’ll need to be familiarized with a pro-style offense, but his pass blocking warrants a selection in the early rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Projected draft range: Second round-fourth round
Jalen Thompson, S
Thompson has played well over the last three seasons for the Cougars, which has made him a worthy draft prospect. At Washington State, he has totaled 185 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, 16 passes defended, five fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. In his junior season, he has 61 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one interception, seven passes defended, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.
He is 6-foot and 190, meaning he’ll likely be a free safety in the NFL. Because he is a player that is projected to go in the later rounds, it might be best if he goes back to school for another year.
Projected draft range: Fifth round-seventh round
Gardner Minshew, QB
He has bounced around to different schools, but Minshew really excelled this season at Washington State. In his career, Minshew has thrown for 7,964 yards, 60 touchdowns and 20 interceptions on 64.9% completion. His draft stock was non-existent before throwing for 4,477 yards, 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 70.6% completion this season as a Cougar.
Minshew stands 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, which will be ok for NFL scouts. With other quarterbacks breaking the mold of “system quarterbacks” from college to doing well in the NFL, Minshew has a legitimate chance to get drafted and make a roster.
Projected draft range: Sixth round-undrafted free agent
Peyton Pelleur, LB
The fifth-year senior has had a historic career for Washington State. Pelluer has 340 total tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two interceptions, one touchdown, eight passes defended, four fumbles recovered and four forced fumbles. This year Pelluer has 86 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three passes defended, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.
He is short at 6-foot, but is 230 pounds, which is solid. Pelleur will have to prove himself at a training camp of an NFL team and possibly start his career on special teams.
Projected draft range: Sixth round-undrafted free agent
