Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 13.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season
First Round Byes
1. Oregon Ducks (6-0)
Oregon pulled off one of the most impressive wins of the season by defeating Ohio State in a thriller. They hadn’t played up to their potential before this week, but rose to the occasion when they needed to this week.
This week: at Purdue Boilermakers (1-5)
2. Texas Longhorns (6-0)
Texas was able to pull away from Oklahoma to win big. It is another ranked win, but Texas doesn’t quite have a marquee win this season yet. They do pass the eye test with flying colors.
This week: vs. Georgia Bulldogs (5-1)
3. Miami Hurricanes (6-0)
Miami was off this week, but keeps their third spot in these rankings. They are undefeated so they stay at three, but Clemson looks like they also could make a push in the ACC.
This week: at Louisville Cardinals (4-2)
4. BYU Cougars (6-0)
The Cougars stayed undefeated this season by destroying Arizona. They are the current frontrunners in the Big 12 and have already knocked off some of the preseason favorites in the conference.
This week: vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-3)
First Round Hosts
5. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1)
Ohio State didn’t play their best game and still lost by just one on the road. The Buckeyes have plenty to clean up, but still look like one of the best teams in the country.
This week: BYE
6. Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0)
It took a big second half comeback, but the Nittany Lions defeated USC on the road this week. They have yet to beat a team that is of top-tier quality, but Penn State is setting themselves up well for future success.
This week: BYE
7. Georgia Bulldogs (5-1)
Georgia didn’t look great against Mississippi State, but they got another win. The loss to Alabama looks a little more shaky, but if Georgia takes care of business, that won’t hurt them.
This week: at Texas Longhorns (6-0)
8. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)
The Crimson Tide haven’t played well since the start of the game against Georgia. They lost to Vanderbilt last week and nearly lost to South Carolina on Saturday. Alabama keeps the eighth spot for now, but they’ll have to play better to win games down the stretch.
This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
Last Four In
9. Iowa State Cyclones (6-0)
A win over West Virginia kept the Cyclones undefeated. They could end up being the Big 12 champions, but for now have done enough to earn an at-large bid.
This week: vs. UCF Knights (3-3)
10. Clemson Tigers (5-1)
Clemson had no issues defeating Wake Forest, doing so by a wide margin. They haven’t played the toughest competition since week 1 when they lost to Georgia, but Clemson has looked like one of the better teams in the country and they haven’t lost since.
This week: vs. Virginia Cavaliers (4-2)
11. LSU Tigers (5-1)
LSU was able to come back and defeat Ole Miss in overtime. It was a big win that helps put them in the CFP for now. Their loss to USC hurts their case, but the Tigers can make the CFP if they take care of business down the stretch.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2)
12. Boise State Broncos (5-1)
Boise State defeated Hawaii late in the night to move to 5-1. Their lone loss of the season was to Oregon, which is even more understandable after the Ducks defeated Ohio State.
This week: BYE
First Four Out- At Large
Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
Tennessee looked shaky against Florida, but escaped with a win. They certainly don’t look like a top team right now, but by virtue of other teams losing, they stay in contention for the top 12 for now.
This week: vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)
Kansas State Wildcats (5-1)
Kansas State was able to win late against Colorado. The win keeps them in contention in a Big 12 that seems like it will be competitive.
This week: at West Virginia Mountains (3-3)
Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)
Indiana was on a bye this week, but have put themselves in a good spot with an undefeated record.
This week: vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-1)
Pittsburgh Panthers (6-0)
Pitt was able to hang on against Cal to stay undefeated. The Panthers don’t have a huge win to help their case yet, but could compete in the ACC.
First Four Out- Group of Five
UNLV Rebels (5-1)
UNLV defeated Utah State in week 7 to rebound from their loss to Syracuse. The fifth conference champion spot might come down between the Rebels and Boise State, two Mountain West teams.
This week: at Oregon State Beavers (4-2)
Navy Midshipmen (5-0)
Navy didn’t have a game in week 7 after defeating Air Force in week 6. They are undefeated and beating teams by significant margins this season.
This week: vs. Charlotte 49ers (3-3)
Army Black Knights (6-0)
Army didn’t have any problems beating UAB extending their undefeated record. The Black Knights have more passing ability than in past years, which could make them dangerous.
This week: vs. East Carolina Pirates (3-3)
Liberty Flames (5-0)
Liberty has had more close calls this season, but have stayed undefeated. They got a win over FIU in week 7 and could make the CFP if they stay undefeated.
This week: BYE
