The 2023 NBA Draft Lottery has officially ended, and the order for the draft is now set. The San Antonio Spurs, who had a 14 percent chance to earn the number one overall pick have won the lottery. Tied for best odds with the Spurs were the Pistons and the Rockets.
The Spurs’ official Twitter account tweeted out a celebration directly after winning the lottery.
San Antonio’s previous two number one overall picks were the likes of David Robinson, in 1987, and Tim Duncan in 1997. Robinson won two NBA titles with the franchise, was named NBA MVP, was a 10-time All-Star and a DPOY winner, among a host of other accomplishments. Duncan won five titles (all with San Antonio), was the Finals MVP three times and won two NBA MVPs, again, among many other accolades.
It is beyond likely that the Spurs will once again use their number one pick to draft a big man. Victor Wembanyama, a 7-footer who shoots and handles the ball much like a shooting guard, has been the talk of NBA circles for two years now. The Spurs have the chance to add him to their storied franchise when the 2023 NBA Draft begins on June 22.
