After going 1-3 to start the season, Georgia Tech has decided to fire head football coach Geoff Collins. Here are five potential head coaches for Georgia Tech.
1. Todd Monken
Monken has had some time in both the NFL and at the collegiate level. Currently, he is the offensive coordinator at Georgia, where he helped the Bulldogs win a National Championship. He also was an offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns. His lone head coaching job resulted in him turning around the Southern Miss program. He had one win in year one, three in year two and then had nine in year three before he left for the NFL in 2016.
He could be a good fit at Georgia Tech for a few reasons. Monken is already in the state of Georgia with the Bulldogs, so he is familiar with recruiting the area and wouldn’t have to relocate too far. Georgia Tech did not fully transition well from a triple-option offense. Monken has plenty of experience coaching offense at the pro and college level, which means he should be able to raise the level of play. Georgia Tech may also take some pride in pulling Monken away from their rival. He currently is helping Stetson Bennett’s level of play improve tremendously.
2. Deion Sanders
Deion Sanders has brought a lot of value to Jackson State and HBCU’s as a whole. He went 4-3 in his first season as head coach. In 2021, his second season, Sanders led the Tigers to an 11-2 record, which included a SWAC Championship and an appearance in the Celebration Bowl. So far this season, Sanders has won all four games.
If Sanders can recruit top players to Jackson State, he can do even better at Georgia Tech. Sanders has history with the city after playing for both the Braves and the Falcons. Whether he is ready to leave the job at Jackson State might be the question, as he does have two sons on the team. If Georgia Tech wanted to make a splash and give a good chance of turning around their program, they should call Prime Time.
3. Bill O’Brien
Bill O’Brien has plenty of NFL experience as an offensive coordinator and as a head coach which can be appealing. He does also have two years at Penn State as a head coach. In a very difficult situation taking over for Joe Paterno and plenty of NCAA limitations, O’Brien won 15 games in two seasons. Now, he is the offensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban.
Because of his previous experience helping turn Penn State around, O’Brien could do something similar at Georgia Tech. As mentioned, the Yellow Jackets need someone who can help them complete the transition from triple option to a more traditional offense and O’Brien also has the expertise to do that. If his play-calling improves by the end of the year at Alabama, Georgia Tech could be calling him.
4. Dan Mullen
Mullen is currently an analyst at ESPN. Before that, he was the head coach at Florida and Mississippi State. He had some job security at Mississippi State after posting a 69-46 career record, but decided to leave for Florida. Mullen was fired after going 34-15 in four seasons.
During his stints at Mississippi State and Florida, Mullen gained fame for being able to work with quarterbacks. Georgia Tech has a solid quarterback in Jeff Sims. If Mullen is hired and can get the most out of him, it would be a worthwhile hire. Georgia Tech isn’t one of the big powerhouse programs, much like Mississippi State, where Mullen had success. He has recruiting ties in the south and could help them be a factor in the ACC.
5. Jamey Chadwell
Jamey Chadwell is famous for having a mullet and for doing a great job of coaching at Coastal Carolina. He has a 34-19 record overall at the school. In the last three seasons, he has won 26 games and lost just three. Considering Coastal Carolina made the jump from the FCS to the FBS in 2016, those are impressive feats.
Whether or not any school can pry Chadwell away from Myrtle Beach is questionable. He has shown he can get the most out of his talent and could improve at a power five school. His offense is also a spread-option hybrid that could mesh together well with some of the talent already at Georgia Tech. His recruiting ties are in the south and could be a good fit for Georgia Tech as they try to rebound.
