The college football season is here. Every week, different news and notes will pop up, which will affect what happens on the field and off it. Here are the college football week 1 news and notes.
Mustafa Johnson Given Waiver for Colorado
After declaring for the NFL Draft, Mustafa Johnson has been given a waiver by the NCAA to return to school. There is no word on when he might be eligible yet.
Big news for Colorado: DL Mustafa Johnson, who declared for the NFL Draft in January but wasn’t selected, has been granted an NCAA waiver to return to CU, per a source. It’s unclear when Johnson, who was 2nd-team All-Pac-12 in 2020, could be eligible to play. #cubuffs

New Uniforms
Kansas has unveiled new throwback uniforms for the school to wear during homecoming against Texas Tech on October 16.

Washington has unveiled throwbacks to remember the 1991 split-national championship team (with Miami).

Starting Quarterback News
- Florida Atlantic will start Miami-transfer N’Kosi Perry at quarterback.
- Tennessee plans to start Michigan-transfer Joe Milton against Bowling Green.
- South Carolina starter Luke Doty is injured and out for the opener against Eastern Illinois. Former Iowa State and North Dakota State quarterback Zeb Noland will take over after being a graduate assistant for the Gamecocks. Noland figured his college career was over after North Dakota State lost in the FCS Playoffs in the spring of 2021, so he took the job as a grad assistant. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
- After getting injured in week 0 for Illinois, Brandon Peters has begun throwing the football. He likely won’t be available this weekend, but should return soon. Art Sitkowski is expected to start.
Hurricane Ida news
- LSU will practice in Houston because of Hurricane Ida leading up to their game in week 1 against UCLA.
- Tulane vs. Oklahoma is being moved to Norman because of Hurricane Ida.
- Tulane will operate out of Birmingham for the time being. They will possibly play games in Birmingham if they can’t return to New Orleans in time for their next scheduled home games (Morgan State). They also practiced at Alabama.
- Temple and Rutgers will play on Saturday at Noon EST because of Tropical Storm Ida. The game will be aired on Big Ten Network.
COVID Policies
- If one SEC team can’t play due to COVID, they will forfeit. If both teams can’t play, both teams will get a loss on their record.
- MAC schools will forfeit if they can’t play because of COVID. If both teams can’t play it will be a no-contest.
Other News and Notes
- Kalani Sitake has signed a contract extension with BYU through 2025.
- Chris Creighton signs extension with EMU through 2025.
- Jim McElwain had surgery for appendicitis. Assistant Tim Skipper will take over in McElwain’s absence.
