He came into college as a highly-touted recruit and played three season at that level. Now, Bassey is preparing for the pros by entering the 2021 NBA Draft.
As a five-star prospect out of Kentucky, Bassey surprised many by going to college at Western Kentucky. He averaged 14.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a freshman. The Hilltoppers went 20-14, but missed the postseason. They went 20-10 before COVID canceled the 2020 NCAA Tournament the next season. Bassey put up 15.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. For his final season of college basketball, Bassey averaged 17.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Western Kentucky went 21-8 and made the NIT Quarterfinals.
Bassey decided to forego his remaining eligibility and enter the 2021 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a late first round or early second round pick.
Strengths
Bassey has solid size, athleticism and body control for the NBA. He is 6-foot-10 and has solid length. To go with his size, Bassey is quicker and faster than most big men. He runs the floor well and is a threat in transition. In addition to that, he can also dribble pretty well, which helps him too.
He will be able to protect the rim at the NBA level. Bassey averaged 3.1 blocks per game last season. He demonstrates good timing and uses his athleticism to soar up high to deflect the ball. His rim protection is not limited to help defense, if he gets switched on a smaller player, he has the speed to catch up and block their shot, even if he looks like he is beat at first.
His rebounding is also really good, as he averaged 10.5 rebounds over his career. Bassey boxes out well and judges where the ball will come off the rim well. On top of that, he has the athleticism to go high point the basketball and come down with it. This goes for both ends of the floor, as he averaged 3.3 offensive rebounds last season. He excelled at getting second-chance opportunities.
Weaknesses
Bassey needs to become a more consistent shooter. He did shoot over 30 percent from deep as a junior, which showed improvement, but he needs to keep improving. If he can knock down shots from the mid-range and from deep, he will be a bigger offensive threat.
His offensive game needs more work than just shooting. Bassey needs to work on his post moves. A lot of his points come in transition or on second chances. When he is fed the ball in the half-court, he needs to have a few moves to be a threat to score. If he can add a few and specifically find some where he can go left, it would help him a lot.
He needs to keep the ball moving offensively. Bassey averaged 0.8 assists per game at Western Kentucky. His passing can improve by him becoming more aware of when double teams are coming and finding the open man. Teams can help a lot more on Bassey because he doesn’t find his open teammates frequently. Getting his assist to turnover ration closer to the positive is important for Bassey.
