College football is back. While not all teams are back, a lot of teams are preparing for week 6. Here are five things to watch for in college football week 6.
1. Is Miami for Real?
The biggest thing to watch this weekend is the Clemson-Miami game. The Hurricanes have stood out this season so far, as D’Eriq King has the offense looking really good. They have put up 37 points in the opener and followed it up with 47 and 52 points against Louisville and Florida State. King, tight end Brevin Jordan and the defense will all have to step up if they have any shot of pulling off the upset.
Clemson doesn’t often get tested by good teams in the ACC. This will be one of the biggest ones they have had in a while. If Miami does play well offensively, the game will be put squarely on Trevor Lawrence‘s shoulders. He’s been here before and succeeded. With Travis Etienne helping him in the backfield, Clemson should be able to hold off Miami, but crazier things have happened.
2. Can Virginia Tech Overcome COVID?
Virginia Tech has only been able to play two games so far this season, as they have struggled to stay healthy. They have been missing several players each week they have played, but are still 2-0. The Hokies have defeated NC State and Duke already this season. Now, they are set to take on North Carolina in a ranked matchup on Saturday.
There aren’t any current reports on players that will be missing fro this week, but 21 players and two coaches missed the game against Duke. Virginia Tech runs the ball well, while UNC stops the run. The Hokies will have to be at their best to beat the Tar Heels, but it isn’t going to be easy, especially if they still have players out with COVID.
3. Will Florida’s Offense Keep This up?
Florida is usually known for their good defenses, but this season their offense has been something to watch. Kyle Trask has 684 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception on 71.8 percent completion. Their two top running backs, Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis, average over 5.0 yards per carry. Tight end Kyle Pitts has 15 catches for 227 yards and six touchdowns in just two games. Wide receiver Kadarius Toney has made big plays with 11 receptions for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
This week, Florida has a ranked matchup against Texas A&M. The Aggies just allowed Alabama to score 52 points on them. While Alabama has playmakers, Florida has some matchup nightmares for defenses. Can Florida keep their offense rolling against a ranked team this weekend or will Texas A&M get back on track?
4. Can Tennessee Compete This Year?
Tennessee got two wins to start the season. They beat South Carolina and Missouri for two solid wins. These were games that the Volunteers should have won, especially if they wish to start competing in the SEC East. This week, the Volunteers will have a chance to line up across from one of SEC’s best teams.
Georgia is coming off of a blowout win over Auburn. Auburn’s offense struggled to move the ball against Georgia’s defense. Tennessee has scored over 30 points in each of their first two games. With a good offensive line and experienced players on offense, they’ll need to be at their best to give themselves a shot.
5. Undefeated Sun Belt Matchup
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns shocked everyone when they defeated Iowa State in their opener. Since that point, they have won two close games against Georgia State and Georgia Southern. Levi Lewis has thrown for 723 yards and four touchdowns this season. They have good skill position players and a solid team overall. If they can win this week and go 4-0, they will be the favorites to win the Sun Belt and could even make a New Year’s Six Bowl.
Coastal Carolina also had an upset win over a Big 12 team. For the second straight season, Coastal Carolina beat the Kansas Jayhawks. The Chanticleers also beat FCS-level Campbell and Arkansas State, who beat Kansas State for another Sun Belt over Big 12 upset. Grayson McCall has led the team well with 728 passing yards and nine touchdowns. The game is at noon EST on ESPN and is worth watching.
