Lewis was one of the best edge rushers in the 2016 recruiting class and chose to go to Alabama for his college career. The four years he spent at Alabama helped Lewis be a top 10 edge rusher in the 2020 NFL Draft class.
He played as a reserve in 11 games as a freshman, registering 11 tackles. As a sophomore, he missed 10 games with an arm injury. In the four games he did play, he registered two tackles for loss and one sack. Lewis had a knee injury and redshirted in 2018. He returned in 2019 and made a huge impact for the Crimson Tide. The redshirt junior registered 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. His play helped Alabama win 11 games, including the Citrus Bowl.
Although he was injured for a lot of his college career, Lewis was able to get enough good play on tape to be considered a highly-valued draft prospect. He is currently projected to be selected on day two of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Strengths
Lewis has a great build for an edge rusher in the NFL. He stands 6-foot-5 and 262 pounds, which will make him fit right in at the NFL level. With his size, he should be able to play 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 defensive end. This ability will make him fit into just about any scheme in the NFL. He also has good strength and length with 33 7/8-inch arms.
He is a solid athlete for his size, which will draw teams’ interests. Lewis can move decently and has solid short-area quickness. His athleticism and quickness both help him beat offensive tackles as he is usually better in these areas than them. He helped show some of his athleticism at the NFL Combine with a 37-inch vertical jump. Lewis should be able to win with speed at the next level.
His pass-rushing production is solid for his limited time on the field. In 14 games over his last two seasons on the field, Lewis registered seven sacks. Lewis uses his unique size and athletic ability to win a lot of matchups. With more regular time on the field, Lewis might be able to get into a rhythm and produce at a higher clip.
Weaknesses
Lewis will likely drop on a lot of teams’ big boards because of his injuries and lack of experience. He only played 14 games from 2017 to 2019. With a knee injury and an arm injury holding him back in college, medical reports from the NFL Combine will be crucial. Lewis needs to stay on the field and prove he can stay healthy.
He lacks awareness when on the field. Lewis can bee fooled by play-action passes, misdirections and more. He needs to learn to stay at home and to become more aware of what is going on around him. This may come with more reps, which is something he didn’t have the luxury of having at Alabama.
While he was a proficient pass rusher, he has some work to do as a run stopper. He needs to play more aggressively in stopping the run. Diagnosing plays better will also help him improve this area. Lewis was an inconsistent tackler as well, so improving these three areas should help his run defense overall.
Projected Draft Range:Â Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
