After a tough Week 8 ended in a 0-2 record, Golden Guardians sit at 6-10. With the fifth and sixth teams at 8-8, they are on the verge of missing playoffs. It is now out of their control. Even if they win 2-0 this weekend, they will need Immortals to go 0-2 and Team Liquid to not go 2-0 to have a chance. At this point, the best thing the team can do is focus on winning their two games.
CLG (3-13)
Counter Logic Gaming is the only team in the LCS who are mathematically eliminated from playoffs. This won’t stop them from playing spoiler, however. With wins against Team Liquid and Team Solo Mid, the team has already shown they are not always a pushover. Pobelter has been the hard carry for them in several games this season. A veteran with LCS Championship’s and Worlds appearances on his resume, he can be the spark this team needs to knock out playoff contenders. Goldenglue has had a rough few games, and Pobelter may add to that list. Greyson finished the weekend with a forgettable scoreline of 1/10/2. Hauntzer and Huhi were close, with KDAs of 0/7/0 and 2/12/4 respectively. In GG victories this season, Goldenglue has usually been one of the main contributors. If the team wants to have any shot at making playoffs, they need him and FBI to step up big time.
FlyQuest (9-7)
After a strong start to the season, FlyQuest has lost three of their last four games. They are now tied with Evil Geniuses and TSM at 9-7 and could still miss playoffs if things crash and burn. PowerOfEvil is playing well and could give Goldenglue problems as one of the main carries for the team. Additionally, Ignar looks like one of the best supports in the league. Although Huhi had two strong first games, this weekend went much worse. Depending on the version of Huhi this weekend, the bottom lane could snowball out of control. If Huhi looks strong, he may be able to help set up FBI for success, who is usually the main win condition.
Outlook
When it comes to the end of the season, it always feels bad when playoff chances are out of a team’s control. When thinking back about the whole season, even just one extra victory would be huge. For example, the first game of the season against 100T was looking promising but turned against GG based off of a stolen Elder Dragon. If Meteos doesn’t survive with 10HP or Closer is able to live just a little longer to get the smite, then GG would be in a more manageable spot. Hindsight is always 20/20, however. Bottom line, if Golden Guardians does not go 2-0 they cannot make playoffs. Even if they do, they will have to get lucky to make it. All they can do when put in a spot like this is get themselves in the best position possible. As past seasons have shown, in the last days of the season, anything can happen.
