The Golden Guardians continue to show signs of improvement, closing out a 2-0 week this past Sunday. Facing Counter Logic Gaming and Team Dignitas, they were able to extend their current winning streak to 3. Improving to a record of 4-4, they are now tied for fourth place with TSM and Team Dignitas.
Counter Logic Gaming vs. Golden Guardians
Result: W (3-4)
Counter Logic Gaming has started off slow in the 2020 Spring LCS split, and is firmly cemented in last place at the moment. For a team like Golden Guardians that is trying to break out of the pack at .500, this was a must win game. CLG started off strong with several good early fights, but GGS was able to get several kills onto their main carries. Goldenglue popped off on Cassiopeia versus world champion Crown, and FBI had some good teamfighting on Kaisa. Solid engages from Keith and Closer around baron and bot is what really sealed the deal. Although Yumi is able to keep team members topped off, GGS was able to use chain CC to 100-0 key members of CLG through the healing. While the game was close for the majority of the time, several key mistakes by CLG tipped it into the favor of GGS.
Team Dignitas vs. Golden Guardians
Result: W (4-4)
Team Dignitas started off the season strong, but after losing several games in a row they were beginning to look shaky. The game versus Golden Guardians was not a sign of a turnaround for them. Dignitas started with a questionable draft, including first picking Elise for Grig and giving up two power picks in Ornn and Aphelios. The rest of the game could be described as either “Bot Difference” or “Jungle Difference”. Elise is famed for her early game pressure, but at 25 minutes Grig had only been involved in one kill. On the flip side, Closer built full tank and had solid engages throughout most of the game. Moving towards the bottom side of the map, Keith and FBI once again had a strong showing. FBI flame horizoned Johnsun and was the deciding factor in turning around a 4v5 fight at dragon.
Although Gangplank and Orianna have decent scaling, Dignitas was never able to stabilize and get to a point where they could get the necessary items to win team fights. On the side of GGS, Ornn upgrades were just icing on the cake for a super fed Aphelios. Additionally, Hauntzer and Closer were able to find multiple good engages while Aphromoo looked disjointed from the rest of Dignitas as the only real source of engage. All in all, this was a solid team win from GGS.
Looking Ahead
Flyquest (5-3)
Flyquest is currently tied for second place and has looked like one of the strongest teams in the LCS in the last few weeks. The bottom lane of Wildturtle and Ignar has been playing well and mid laner POE continues to be a rock. With GGS one game back in the standings and second place up for grabs, this should be a close affair. This will arguably be the strongest opponent that Golden Guardians has faced since playing Cloud 9 in week one; this will be a good test to see if they are the real deal instead of the last three games being a fluke.
100 Thieves (3-5)
Coming into Week 5, 100 Thieves is on a three game losing streak. Ssumday has been a standout in the top lane and Cody Sun continues to be a strong late game teamfighter. However, Ryoma has struggled and Meteos has had some uncharacteristically poor performances. After giving a former world champion the business this past weekend, Goldenglue is looking to pop off once again. These teams previously played in Week 1, and only a miracle Elder Dragon steal by Meteos prevented a GGS victory. With the majority of the LCS hovering around .500, that one game would’ve had a big change on standings. GGS would now be tied for second and 100T would be second to last. If history repeats itself, and both teams stay on the same trajectory, Golden Guardians should come home with a victory.
